Most of the building now known as El Nido was built by Timeteo Griego in the 1920's. Griego and his wife lived in what is now the front dining room, the rest of the building serving as a popular dance hall on weekends. Several years and three fatal shootings later, Griego was forced to close his spirited gathering place. For the next eleven years, El Nido passed through varied hands. For a time, two elderly ladies sold gas and candy from the front of the building and raised canaries in the rear. Another owner, known as "Ma" Nelson, turned the former dance hall into a brothel, featuring herself as a madam.
